Product Description
The most important properties of cast iron are its heat retention and heat distribution. It is also extremely durable. With seasoning and time a natural, permanent non-stick cooking surface develops. Properly cared for, cast iron will last for generations. Considered by professional chefs to be precision cooking tools, quality cast iron utensils enable precise control of cooking temperatures. Its heat retention qualities allow for even cooking temperatures without hot spots....
Amazon.com Review
Cast-iron pots have always been the perfect camping cookware, partly due to their heat retention (what other surface cooks so nicely over an open fire?), but also because they fit so nicely into Old West lore. We're all familiar with the classic image of cowboys sitting around the campfire as a cast-iron pot hangs over the coals and slow-cooks a rabbit stew. Now you can indulge your frontier fantasies with this Lodge 6-quart Dutch oven, which can fry, sauté, grill, bake, or roast a host of meats, soups, and breads. The Dutch oven features a flanged lid, so you can place hot coals on the top for an extra heat source. The lid also flips over to serve as a griddle for pancakes or burgers. The oven includes built-in legs that sit comfortably on top of the campfire or in the fireplace, in addition to a hanging handle that hooks above the cooking surface. The oven measures 12 inches in diameter, is 3-3/4 inches deep, and weighs 20 pounds.
Users are recommended to season the product before use according to the company's instructions (this prevents rust and delivers a permanent nonstick cooking surface). This Dutch oven is not dishwasher-safe, so hand washing is recommended. --Rivers Janssen

As a Scoutmaster, I cook over a campfire often. This dutch oven is the best for cooking outdoors. Almost anything can be cooked in this dutch oven. You are limited only by your imagination. In my Troop, Scouts as young as 11-12 use dutch ovens regularly. I cook with my dutch oven at home over charcoal in the yard or on the gas stove in the house. My family likes to see me get out my dutch oven.

This is the best way to cook over an open fire. You can not beat the way the dutch oven cooks up a hearty meal after a long hard day (heh!) of fising and hiking. WoooHooo this makes the best Stew!

This is a common campfire cooking device. So my review will be based on camping.
Even heating and indestructability are what defines cast iron dutch ovens. Lodge is THE name in cast iron. If you have a campfire and want to cook anything besides a hotdog or marshmellow this is the way to do it.
Cast iron is prone to rust. So if you are camping in the rain expect a little orange. It comes off easily enough with a little scrubbing or some steel wool, but it is the major downside to cast iron. Oiling it helps reduce rust, but if it gets a lot of contact with water it will rust anyway.
Cast iron is heavy. Count this out if you are backpacking. I have no idea how much this weighs, but I am sure it is too much. Also if you are using one of those cute little backpacking stoves this is way to heavy to balance on them.
Overall I love to use cast iron whenever I can, but sometimes you just can't.
